PoE versus WiFi: Which CCTV Setup Fits?

A camera mounted high on a shed, at the front gate or under the caravan awning has one job: capture clear footage when you need it. That is where the PoE versus WiFi decision matters. Both can provide reliable CCTV coverage, but they suit very different installations, power arrangements and expectations.

For a fixed home, workshop or small business system, PoE cameras are usually the practical choice when cabling is possible. WiFi cameras can be useful where running cable would be difficult, temporary or simply not worthwhile. The right answer comes down to the site, not which option sounds more modern.

PoE versus WiFi: the key difference

PoE means Power over Ethernet. A single network cable carries both power and data between the camera and a PoE network video recorder (NVR) or PoE switch. The camera does not need a separate power point at its mounting location.

A WiFi camera sends its video data wirelessly to your router, recorder or wireless network. Most WiFi cameras still require a power cable and a nearby power point. Battery WiFi cameras are available, but they are a separate category with their own compromises around charging, recording time and motion-triggered operation.

The important distinction is that WiFi removes the data cable, not necessarily every cable. This catches out plenty of first-time buyers planning cameras for an eave, detached garage or gate.

Why PoE suits permanent CCTV installations

A PoE system is built around physical connections. Each camera is cabled back to an NVR or PoE switch, creating a stable network dedicated to the security system. Once installed correctly, it is a dependable option for homes, commercial yards, workshops and rural properties.

Reliable video where it counts

Wired Ethernet is not affected by the same issues that can disrupt wireless signals. Brick walls, metal sheds, insulation, solar equipment, neighbouring WiFi networks and distance can all reduce WiFi performance. A PoE camera has a direct cable path, so it is less likely to drop out just as a vehicle enters the driveway or a person approaches the door.

This matters particularly for higher-resolution cameras. Detailed footage produces more data, and multiple cameras recording at once place a greater load on a network. PoE gives each camera a consistent connection to the recorder, making it well suited to 24/7 recording and systems with several cameras.

One cable for power and data

Running one Cat5e or Cat6 cable is often neater than arranging a power outlet and separate networking equipment at every camera point. It also makes fault finding simpler. If a camera loses power or connection, an installer can check the cable run, PoE port and recorder from one central location.

Standard Ethernet cable runs are generally suitable for distances up to 100 metres between the PoE source and camera. Larger properties can still be covered with appropriate switches, fibre links, wireless bridges or other extension methods, but these should be planned as part of the system rather than added as an afterthought.

Better control with an NVR

A PoE NVR records footage locally to a hard drive. That means the cameras can keep recording even if the household internet service goes down. You may lose remote viewing on your mobile while the internet is unavailable, but the local footage remains on the recorder.

For customers who want a proper multi-camera security system, local recording is a major advantage. It gives you predictable storage, a single place to review events, and avoids relying solely on individual cameras or cloud subscriptions.

When WiFi cameras make sense

WiFi cameras have a place, especially for smaller jobs and awkward locations. If you want to watch a single internal room, a front entry, a temporary site or an area where cable runs are not practical, a quality WiFi camera may be the sensible solution.

They can be quicker to install because there is no Ethernet run back to an NVR. This can reduce installation work in a finished home where access above ceilings is limited. A WiFi camera may also be useful as an additional camera after a wired system is already in place.

For caravans, motorhomes and temporary campsites, WiFi can be particularly handy for local viewing around the vehicle. A camera connected to an onboard router or suitable monitor setup can help cover an entry door, storage area or reversing position without re-cabling the whole vehicle. The system still needs a reliable power source, and its wireless range should be tested in the actual parking or camp setup.

The limits of wireless coverage

WiFi performance is site-specific. A camera that works perfectly inside a home can struggle once it is mounted outside behind double brick, foil insulation or metal cladding. In a shed or caravan park, surrounding networks may also compete for wireless capacity.

A weak WiFi signal can cause delayed live view, poor image quality, missed recording segments or a camera that regularly disconnects. Adding a WiFi extender may help in some cases, but it does not always solve poor placement or heavy interference. For an important area such as a front gate, driveway or business entrance, a cable is often the more dependable investment.

WiFi cameras also depend on correct network setup. Your router needs adequate coverage, a secure password and enough capacity for the number of connected devices. If your modem is replaced or the network password changes, the cameras may need to be reconnected.

Installation cost: compare the whole job

WiFi is not automatically cheaper, and PoE is not automatically expensive. The equipment cost is only one part of the decision.

A single WiFi camera close to a power point can be a cost-effective addition. However, a camera at the far end of a property may need outdoor-rated power, a weatherproof enclosure, WiFi extension equipment and professional setup. At that point, running Ethernet may offer better long-term value.

PoE usually costs more to install where cable routes are difficult, such as multi-storey homes, finished ceilings or long underground runs. But the extra work can pay off in reliability and easier expansion. If you know you want four, six or eight cameras, it is generally better to plan the cable routes, recorder position and storage capacity from the beginning.

Do not overlook camera placement. A well-positioned camera with a clear view, suitable lens angle and good lighting is more useful than an expensive camera mounted too high or pointed across a wide, dark yard. The same applies whether it is wired or wireless.

Power planning for homes, sheds and vehicles

PoE is especially straightforward where mains power is available at the recorder location. The NVR or PoE switch supplies power down the network cables, while the cameras remain outside or in hard-to-reach positions without individual adaptors.

For off-grid sheds, farms, caravans and mobile installations, power planning needs more attention. A CCTV system draws power continuously when cameras and a recorder are operating. The total load should be considered alongside your battery capacity, solar input, inverter use and other 12V equipment.

WiFi battery cameras can reduce cabling, but they are not always ideal for critical coverage. Many preserve battery life by recording only when motion is detected, which can mean shorter clips or delayed capture. Solar charging panels can extend runtime in suitable locations, although shade, weather and camera activity still affect performance.

A fixed 12V camera system, a properly sized battery bank and an NVR or monitor may be a better fit for a caravan or remote shed that needs regular recording. The choice should follow how often you need footage, how long the system will run without charging, and whether internet access is available.

Remote viewing is not the same as recording

Customers often ask whether they can view cameras on their mobile while away. Both PoE and WiFi systems can support remote viewing when configured correctly. What makes this possible is the internet connection at the property, not whether the camera itself uses Ethernet or WiFi.

If the site has poor fixed internet or limited mobile coverage, remote viewing may be slow or unavailable. The cameras can still record locally on an NVR, which is why local storage is valuable for rural homes, sheds and holiday properties. For remote sites, consider the available mobile signal, data allowance and power supply before choosing a cloud-dependent system.

Security settings matter too. Use strong unique passwords, keep the recorder and cameras updated where supported, and avoid leaving default login details in place. A security system should not become another weak point on the home network.

Choosing the right setup

Choose PoE when you need dependable 24/7 recording, multiple cameras, clear high-resolution footage or coverage over a larger fixed property. It is the stronger option for most new CCTV installations where cable can be run neatly and safely.

Choose WiFi when you need one or two cameras in locations with strong wireless coverage, easy access to power and a genuine reason not to run Ethernet. It is also useful for temporary monitoring and selected caravan applications, provided the power and signal conditions are understood.

A mixed setup can work well too. A PoE NVR system can handle the critical cameras at entries, driveways and sheds, while a WiFi camera covers a convenient indoor or temporary area. The key is not forcing every camera into the same category.

Before buying, map the areas you want to see, identify power and cable paths, and be realistic about WiFi range.
